I rediscovered the internet recently by stumbling across sites like personalsit.es, Neocities, Dead Simple Sites and /now pages which led me to the Indie Web movement, where people make cool websites about whatever topics they like, in whatever style they want, without the ads and commercial noise that has taken over so much of the internet.
Like the YouTuber in this video, I also learnt basic HTML because I wanted to make my Neopets shopfront look pretty and later built a Homestead website about Pokemon.
Watching this video and seeing these personal websites brings back memories of when the internet was fun – before social media took over and made things feel bland .
I hope personal sites make a comeback, so the web feels more personal and creative again. That’s why I’m back posting and carving out a bit of personal space on the internet.
